Bonnie Jo Bridwell was born November 22, 1911, in Purcell, Oklahoma (McClain County), daughter of Sam J. Bridwell (1885-1948) and Emma Holford (1888-1948). In 1920, she was living with her parents and siblings in Purcell, Oklahoma (McClain County) in a home they owned. Her father, Sam, owned a store. The household included: Sam, age 34; Emma, age 31; Sam, Jr., age 11; C. C., age 9; Bonnie Joe, age 8; and her younger sister, Billie, age 4.

By 1930, the family was still in their home in Purcell. Her father was a retail merchant who owned a grocery store. Her mother worked as a saleslady in the store. Her older brother, Cecil C. was 20 years old and working for the railroad. Bonnie was 18, and her sister Billie L. was 14.
