Mrs. W.D. VanHorn Dies in Hospital; Funeral Wednesday
Mrs. Martha E. VanHorn, aged 78, a resident of Malvern for the past 25 years and widow of William Daniel VanHorn, died early today in the Hot Spring County Memorial Hospital. Mrs. VanHorn was born June 23, 1889 in West, Texas and was married to the late Mr. VanHorn, September 3, 1905. She was a Baptist, a Gold Star Mother, and member of American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include six sons, Raymond VanHorn of San Francisco, Calif., Herbert VanHorn of East Gary, Ind., Lawrence VanHorn of St. Louis, Mo., Edward VanHorn of Tulsa, Okla., Eugene VanHorn of VanHorn, Tex. and Donald VanHorn of the U.S. Air Force; three daughters, Mrs. Clara Blackburn of East Gary, Ind., Mrs. Laura Stapp of Tulsa, Okla., and Mrs. Mary Efird of Malvern; two sisters, Mrs Edith Woods of Shawnee, Okla. and Mrs. Maida Wilson of Phoenix, Ariz.; 19 grandchildren.
Funeral will be Wednesday morning at ten o'clock in the chapel of Atkinson Funeral Home with Rev. John Kilburn of Hot Springs officiating. Burial will be in Harp Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Allen Efird, James Turner, Earl Yates, Harold Helms, Charles Wilson, Luther Cunningham, and Jack McGraw.
The family wil be at the home of Mrs. Mary Efird on Highway 9.
She was preceeded in death by two sons, Robert Charles VanHorn in 1908 and Walter Earl VanHorn in 1945.
She was the daughter of Albert Jefferson and Tennessee Leah Vaughan Cook.
Mr and Mrs. VanHorn moved a lot during their marriage. Mr. VanHorn worked for the railroad and they lived in Texas, Missoui, Illinois, Iowa and Arkansas. When I was a
little girl she use to tell us stories of how they move from Texas to Missouri in a covered wagon. She loved to fish and she enjoyed quilting.
