Sarah was the first of 14 children born to Gullik Lien and Berit Knudsdatter Østrem. Gullik and Berit arrived in New York from Vang in the Valdres area of Norway just the month before. It must have been a hard journey for Sarah's mother, sailing across the Atlantic and then stopping in Wisconsin to have her first baby before heading off to Iowa where they would establish a lovely farm. Sarah may have been given the name Sigrid or Siri at birth, but by 1860 her name had become Sarah.

Sarah married Hans Jorgenson (whose name may have been Jorgensen Lermo at one time) on 21 Nov 1877 at the Springfield Norwegian Lutheran Church in Springfield Township, Winneshiek Co, IA. They lived for many years in the Decorah area, all six of their children born there, before moving in 1918 to Silverton, OR, where her husband, Hans, died a few years later. Sarah's obituary states she "died following a long period of failing health. She never fully recovered from a fall in the basement of her home Oct. 10 last year when she broke a bone in her right knee and fractured her right arm. In the spring of 1932 she fell down and broke her collar bone."
