Kjirsti was the fifth of fourteen children born in Springfield Township, Winneshiek county, to Gullik Knudsen Lien and Berit Knudsdatter Østrem. A portion of an unidentified obituary with the handwritten date of November 1926 states: "Kjestie passed away Monday morning at the home of her brother C. G. Lien in Springfield Township after being an invalid for the past eight years, her death being due to cancer. She was a woman beloved by all who knew her and her death brings sorrow to all." Her gravestone spells her name "Kjirsti" and there was no deathdate inscribed.
