Kari was born in Springfield Township, Winneshiek Co, Iowa. She was the 3rd of 14 children. Her parents emigrated from Vang in the Valdres area of Norway in 1850 and established a lovely farm in the Decorah area where all except the oldest of Kari's siblings were born and raised. She was known as Carrie and Caroline as well as Kari.

Kari and her sister Guri died just weeks apart in the winter of 1873-1874.
