Gertrude was the ninth child (of fourteen) born to immigrants, Gullik Knudsen Lien and Berit Knudsdatter Østrem, from Vang, Oppland, Norway. Her baptismal record lists her first name as "Gjertru," which is the Norwegian version of her name.

Sometime between 1880 and 1910, Gertrude headed west to California (perhaps accompanying her brother, Ole, who moved there as well). She married George Livingstone. (Some records spell the name as Livingston.)

Gertrude spent the last years of her life in Eugene, Oregon, where she died as a widow at age 88.
