Birt was the son of Levi G. Hake and Alice Cameron. His paternal grandparents were Andrew F. Hake and Elizabeth Gross.

In 1885, 1895 and 1900 Birt was living with his parents in Harper, Kansas.

Birt first married Ella Mae Onstott in about 1909. Ella was born on 8 May 1862 in Benton, Iowa and died on 23 January 1918 in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. Ella was previously married to Marion S. Rowe. Birt then married Minnie Zentmeyer on 29 September 1918 in Prowers County, Colorado.

In 1910 Birt is living in Wichita, Kansas with Ella Mae and her children by her previous marriage.

In 1920 Birt and Minnie Zentmyer were living in Lamar, Prowers County, Colorado. Birt was a carpenter.
