Samuel J. Duncan (22), nativity Tennessee, a resident of Columbus City, Iowa enlisted as a Private on 23 September 1861 in Company "C", 11th Iowa Infantry. He was mustered in on 03 October 1861.

Based on muster, he would have participated battle of Shiloh Apr 6-7. Siege of Corinth, Mississippi Apr 29 - May 30. Battle of Corinth Oct 3-4. Battle of Port Gibson, Raymond, Jackson, Champion's Hill, Big Black River Crossing. Assault on Ft Beauregard, Vicksburg May 19 and 22. Siege of Vicksburg and Jackson, Mississippi in 1863. Battles of Kenesaw, Mt, Nickajack Creek, Atlanta. Siege of Atlanta, battles of Jonesboro and Lovejoy Station Jun – Aug 1864). Pursuit of Hood into Alabama. (Oct 1-26). He was mustered out of Company C, 11th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 17 October 1864 in Galesville, Alabama.

Andrew L. Duncan (19, 1st cousin, once removed), Harvey 'Samuel' Duncan (20, 1st cousin, once removed), James Charles Duncan (24, brother-in-law) & John Calvin Duncan (18, 1st cousin), all from Tennessee, enlisted the same day into same company as Samuel. All survived the war.

Samuel was married twice. He married Mary Ellen Duncan on 27 December 1866 in Louisa County, Iowa. She died on 16 November 1894. He married Elizabeth May McLane on 21 June 1897 in Allerton, Wayne County, Iowa. Samuel was a farmer.
