"Columbus Junction. The death of two of our oldest citizens and earliest settlers occurred at their homes in this city Thursday. They were James A. Duncan and Samuel Shaw Wilcox. Both were born in Tennessee and in the same county, Blount. Mr. Duncan came with quite a colony of his people, mostly relatives and nearly all members of the same congregation, in 1847. Soon after his arrival he was married to a young lady form the same state and who came west with them. To Mr. and Mrs. Duncan nine children were born, seven daughters and two sons. Two of these died years ago, a son and a daughter. The others all live in this immediate vicinity, except two daughters, one of whom lives in Allerton, the other in Peabody, Kansas. Mr. Duncan, at the time of his death, was almost seventy-seven years of age. His funeral occured Saturday at 2:30 p.m. from the home of his son-in-law, W. D. Pyles. His wife only preceded him to the spirit world a few months ago, having died in July last." Source: The Wapello Tribune, Wapello, Iowa, Friday, 4 March 1904, page 1.
