Known as Wakefield West, he was born in Bond Head, West Gwillimbury, Ontario, Canada. Wakefield was a farmer and brought his family to Sanilac County (probably in October of 1878) to be closer to his brothers Stephen, Dr. Alfred and Dr. David West. Additionally, his wife Matilda had a sister, Julia (Vance) Scott, that was probably on this move to Lexington, Michigan.

Wakefield died at a young age, 46, and it apparently had a deep affect on the family. Soon after, his widow Matilda moves the children to Port Huron to live, giving up the farm life. There was also an apparent law suit filed by Wakefield's brother Dr. David West which seemed to tear the family even farther apart.
