Obituary: Stephen was in good health on a Wednesday, and was engaged in threshing clover. He came into the house in the evening, and after reading aloud a while, ate an apple and started then to have a smoke. He had hardly got his pipe lit, before he fell down. His friends got him up and observing something serious was the matter with him, sent for his brother, Dr. Alfred West, who came almost immediately, and he was put to bed. In answer to questions about his pain he indicated his head as the seat of pain. He soon fell into a comatose condition, which lasted about an hour, when he breathed his last.

Stephen's first wife was Rachel Spooner (1841-1864) who was born and died in East Gwillimbury, York, Ontario, Canada.
