Ben enlists in the Spanish-American War in 1898, and after arriving in Cuba gets Typhoid Fever, never making it into battle. He is very sick and returns home. It is said he loses all his hair, and when it grows back it is white and thin. And thereafter, it is said he looks to be a man older than his years.
Ben was apparently very close to his 1st cousin, Raymond A. West, who is also buried here at Croswell Cemetery. Through the years they exchanged family information/history, photos, and had a similar interest in all things West family related. The memorial for Ben was held at Raymond's home in Croswell, with many relatives attending. Raymond and Benjamin were born 3 years apart.
