Darius was the 6th of 8 children born to Nathan Northrup, a farmer, and Betsy Hollenbeck (Williams) Nash. His siblings were: Mary Elizabeth, John J, Nathan Seth, Phebe Sophronia, William Stover, Amasa Williams and Anson Henry. He was named after his uncle Darius, who was his father's brother. Darius grew up in Illinois.

At the age of 17, he grew a beard and managed to get into the 142nd Regiment, Illinois Infantry (100 days, 1864) during the Civil War. They moved from Camp Butler June 18, 1864, headed for Memphis via Cairo and the Mississippi River, arriving on the 24th. They then moved to White's Station, where they were sent to guard the railroad. They mustered out Oct 17, 1864, at Chicago.

At age 19, Darius went to Iowa on his own, and homesteaded near Livermore, building his cabin twice and losing it to prairie fire. The 3rd time he had the assistance of his older brother, and by then they had a good break around the home, and they built a foundation and a large root cellar underneath.

He lived there on his own for about 12 years, and then married to Idell Cynthia Ward (Idella), a teacher, on July 29, 1876. They had 7 children: Albert Anson, who died as an infant, Clarence William, Hattie Idell, Nellie Nettie, Jay Alvin, Floyd Chapman and Bessie Effie. All of the children were born in the home, none with a doctor, and most without a midwife.

Darius farmed his land (300 acres) until he was no longer able to manage it, and then he and Idella moved into Ames for an easier life. He died at home at the age of 74.
