Nellie was the 4th of 7 children of Darius Albert Nash and Idella Cynthia Ward. She was born on her father's homestead in Livermore, Iowa. Nellie began teaching when she was a young teen, and then attended Iowa Agricultural College, where she graduated in 1907. At some point she moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where she met and married William James Pratt on June 30, 1913. They moved to Washington state, where Nellie taught Domestic Science at the State Normal College in Ellensburg, WA. Nellie died there at the age of 69.
