John van der Linden, caretaker at the city band shell for many years, died at Mary Greeley hospital here at 7:10 this morning following a stroke. He lived at 821 Kellogg. Mr. van der Linden was 74 years of age. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 pm at the Congregational church with the Rev. W. Murray Allan in charge. Mr. van der Linden was born in Pella, Mar. 25, 1879. He was married to Kathleen Gaylord in 1913 in Lake Arthur, N.M. The couple came to Ames in 1917. His wife survives as well as sons John Edward, Northwood; Louis G., Hawaii; and Spencer, of Harlan; brothers, Marinus, Ottumwa and Harry, Hickory, N.C.; sisters, Mrs. J. McCracken, Durham, N.C. and May van der Linden, Ames; and three grandchildren, Susan Marie, Lani Carol and Peter John van der Linden of Ames. Mr. van der Linden was a member of the Congregational church. AMES-John Van Der Linden, father of a well known North Iowan, John E. Van Der Linden of the Northwood Anchor, died following a stroke Friday night. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Congregational Church here. The elder Van Der Linden was associated with Iowa State College for many years.
