Bio by Pam Haislip:
David Wilson Dale, son of James Hamilton Dale and Mary Elizabeth Marshall, was born December 23, 1877. He married Ida Bell Woodard, daughter of William T. Woodard and Wynona Satoka Peoples (Peebles).

Dave was a blacksmith in McBurg; in 1914 he moved his shop to the newly established town of Frankewing. His grandson Wayne Haislip reports being fascinated by the tunes he played with the hammer and anvil; as he hit the metal, he'd allow the hammer to reverberate onto the anvil to keep the timing and beat. Dave also ran a gristmill where he made meal from corn. It was run by a one-cylinder gasoline engine with huge dual flywheels and a maze of belts and pulleys. Papa Dale was one of the first in the area to have electricity -- before TVA or electric power came around. He generated his own electric power with a dynamo, which changes mechanical energy into electrical energy. It does this by using a gasoline engine to turn an armature through a magnetic field, thereby generating electricity.

Dave and Ida Bell had four daughters. One day in 1915 the girls ran outside to see the peddler driving his horse and wagon down the street. Ida Bell, who was pregnant with her fifth child, feared that Nona, a toddler, would be run over, so she chased after her. Ida Bell tripped and fell down the steps, losing the baby. She died at few days later on July 28, 1915.

"Papa Dale" later married Sarah B. Troxler, "Mama Dale." Although he was a prankster in his youth, Papa Dale was known as a very kind man who always looked for good things in everyone. Mama Dale was also a very kind-hearted and welcoming person. In later years it was a tradition to have a Dale reunion on Father's Day at Papa Dale's house. Everyone brought food, which was usually spread outdoors on tables from the shop. After the meal, the adults would gather on the front porch or lawn, and it was time for storytelling. Papa Dale died October 12, 1967, and Mama Dale died May 9, 1974. They had been married for over fifty years.
