He joined the Navy about 1913. Two of the ships he served on were the U. S. S. Satterlee and the U. S. S. Bruce.
Whenever he returned home to visit family in Union County, NC he would bring 'exotic' things such as a stalk of bananas that his nieces still remember to this day. He was a C.B.M. (Chief Bos Mate); always carrying a boatswain's pipe (whistle) for signaling the sailors for riggings, cables, anchors, and probably more (I must confess, I'm not up-to-par on naval terms). The silver pipe is still within the family.
Frank made the Navy his life but planned to retire and return to Union County and marry a sweetheart whom no one remembers the name of. His plans were thwarted by malaria from which he did not recover.
