Daughter of Thomas Hart Benton and Martha Trull, she went by "Emeline". It is assumed the family pronounced it with an 'r' sound in the middle, thus the misspelling upon the tombstone. She married James Jerome on May 27, 1866 (Union County, NC) -- together they had ten children. Her obituary from the Monroe Journal (9-6-1921) notes that she was "quite a conversationalist" (does this mean she talked alot?) and that neighbors "enjoyed hearing her reminiscences about the days of old". Being her great-great granddaughter, I wish I could have enjoyed those stories too.
