Thomas was born in the town of Unionville, NC. Much confusion results over his middle name of which he went by. "Uncle Lann" is how the surviving nieces call him but the name has been seen as "Lannes" and "Lander".

We'll go with what was on his Social Security application in 1942 and list his middle name as Lannes:

Name: Thomas Lannes Jerome
Gender: Male
Race: White
Birth Date: 7 Feb 1877
Birth Place: Union, North Carolina
Father:
James A Jerome
Mother:
Dorcas E Benton
SSN: 237328623
Notes: Mar 1942: Name listed as THOMAS LANNES JEROME [index found at Ancestry.com]

He first married (Mary) Jennie McManus in Mecklenburg County, NC on Dec. 23, 1897 (per index from microfilm, no parents' names were listed for either). They are seen on both the 1900 and the 1910 censuses of Mecklenburg (no children). Their marriage certificate was later found on Ancestry.com:

Name: T L Jerome
Gender: Male
Race: White
Age: 24
Birth Year: abt 1873
Marriage Date: 23 Dec 1897
Marriage Place: Mecklenburg, North Carolina, USA
Father: J A Jerome
Mother: Emeline Jerome
Spouse:
Jennie M McManus
Spouse Gender: Female
Spouse Race: White
Spouse Age: 19
Spouse Father: Ferlow McManus
Spouse Mother: Maggie McManus
Event Type: Marriage

His WWI draft registration card, which lists his mother as Emeline Jerome, living in Unionville, NC, which would be correct, shows that he is a laborer at the Naval yard in Norfolk, VA. Eyes are blue, hair is black. The date of registration was not listed on the card but given that his mother is listed instead of a wife indicates that he and Jennie (Mary) are no longer together. We do not know what happened to Jennie (or "Mary J.") and no divorce has been found online but there is a Mary Jane Jennie Shaver, d/o J. T. McManus & Margaret at memorial #33552791. We believe the "T" on the marriage record is for Thurlow and that the "Ferlow" on the marriage record should have been Thurlow; we will link T. L. and her unless someone asks to undo this.

Neither Thomas or Mary/Jennie have been found on the 1920 census but Lann marries Susanna Fisher on June 30, 1919 per a Fisher researcher (and Family Search's database confirms this as happening in Cumberland County, NC). From Ancestry.com (note the spelling of his last name):
Name: Susana Fisher
Gender: Female
Race: White
Age: 38
Birth Year: abt 1881
Marriage Date: 30 Jun 1919
Marriage Place: Cumberland, North Carolina, USA
Spouse:
T L Gerome
Spouse Gender: Male
Spouse Race: White
Spouse Age: 46
Spouse Father: James Gerome
Spouse Mother: Emaline Gerome
Event Type: Marriage

We also note here that on T.L.'s death certificate, his spouse is listed as Sue Fisher - but records show that he remarries in 1942, also found at Ancestry.com:

Name: Thomas Lannes Jerome
Gender: Male
Race: White
Age: 68
Birth Year: abt 1874
Marriage Date: 8 Jan 1942
Marriage Place: Union, North Carolina, USA
Father: J A Jerome
Mother: Emeline Benton
Spouse:
Mattie Simpson
Spouse Gender: Female
Spouse Race: White
Spouse Age: 48
Spouse Father: Bill Simpson
Spouse Mother: Virgie Sehorn
Event Type: Marriage

No further information for this marriage or what became of it.

Lann was a farmer most of his life.

One niece (Rachel Mungo Thomas) shared that when they lived nearby in the Clear Creek community of Mecklenburg, Uncle Lann would pay her and her siblings $1.00 per bag for the cotton they would pick. They would fill the bags with rocks placing a small amount of cotton on top. Sure that their Uncle knew what they were doing, he played along with them anyway and paid each of them their dollar.

Lann died of cancer in 1947.
