Irving is the son of Wm. Albert "Bert" and Priscilla Jane (Eskridge)Roberts. He was born in Knoxville, Knox, Tennessee. He married Mary Elizabeth Doolin in Illinois, then as a newly wed served in the Spanish American War. Irving was a "railroad man" moving West as the railroad progressed toward the West and Salt Lake City, serving as a conductor. After retirement, he along with Mary became a rancher in Declo, then Rupert, Idaho. Together they had 3 sons and 2 daughters.
