Hervey was the eighth of 11 children of Nathaniel Stowell Jr., a farmer and veteran of the American Revolution, and Lois Bugbee Stowell.

A farmer, he lived in Peru all of his life and was a member of the Congregational Church.

Hervey married Margaret Converse on Nov. 21, 1797 in Peru. The couple had 12 children: Austin in 1799, James Converse in 1801, Hiram in 1802, Caroline in 1804, Franklin in 1807, Althea in 1808, Cynthia in 1811, Esther Amanda in 1812, John Marshall in 1814, Harvey Eugene in 1816, Susannah Armista in 1819 and Margaret Parthenia in 1821.

After Margaret passed away in 1824, Hervey wed Jerusha Parsons on March 17, 1825 in Peru. They had a daughter Lucelia in 1831. Unfortunately Lucelia died in 1844.
