James was the second of 12 children of Hervey Stowell, a farmer, and Margaret Converse Stowell.

A farmer and carpenter, he lived in Peru all of his life. He was married three times.

Marriage banns were published for James and Almira Rogers on Dec. 13, 1821 in Peru. They wed shortly thereafter. James and Almira had three children: Joseph Converse (called Converse) in 1724, Stephen (birthyear unknown) and Lucius O.D. in 1827.

Almira passed away in 1835. James married (2nd) Jerusha Hulbert a year or two later. They had a daughter Cynthia Maria in 1838.

Jerusha died in 1841. James married (3rd) Harriet Bacon a year later, and they had a son William Wetmore in 1843.

Tragically, only two of James' children survived to an advanced age. Stephen and Lucius both passed away in 1828, while William died in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1863 while serving with Company C, 49th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteers in the Civil War.
