Austin was the eldest of 12 children of Hervey Stowell, a farmer, and Margaret Converse Stowell. He grew up in Peru.

He wed Apalonia Douglas in Pittsfield, Berkshire Co. about 1823.

According to the Diary of George Holcomb of Stephentown, located in the Stephentown Historical Society, Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., New York and transcribed and submitted by Kathy "Vary" Becker:

"18 Sep 1823 Benjamin Douglas' dau Apalona died in P'fld, m/ (Austin) Stowell only a few months ago (age 21) and funeral was today in Elder Jones meetinghouse"
