Harvey was the tenth of 12 children of Hervey Stowell, a farmer, and Margaret Converse Stowell.

He married Betsey Ann Stannard on Mar. 31, 1837.

They had eight children: John R. about 1838, Louisa about 1839, Sarah M. about 1841, Harlon P. about 1843, Celestia about 1847, Harvey E. about 1850, Mary J. about 1852 and Margaret about 1857.

Harvey served in the Civil War in Company 3, 49th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

He was a farmer and a carpenter in civilian life. The family moved around a lot: from Massachusetts, to Illinois, to Iowa.

He was in the State Penitentiary, West Point, Lee Co., Iowa in 1885.

It is unknown how and why he ended up in Leavenworth.
