Joseph Boatman Townsend attended the University of Montana; and volunteered for the Army during WWI. He received his commission at the Presido in San Francisco, CA; and as a 2nd Lieutenant, he attended Field Artillery training at Fort Sill, OK. He served with the 347 Field Artillery, 91st Division,U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant in France during WWI. He was later married to Mildred Catherine Shaw. They had two sons, Joseph Boatman Townsend Jr. and Robert Shaw Townsend.
