Ira Townsend Rites Conducted

Alder - Funeral services for Ira Townsend, long-time ranch hand in the Upper Ruby country, who died March 17 at the age of 81, were conducted last week at the Raper chapel in Virginia City and burial was in the Dillon cemetery.

Mr. Townsend, who had been cattle driver, drayman, freighter and general handyman for the Gilbert Livestock company for most of his working life, was a native of Missouri. He was born in that state Jan. 3, 1872, and came to Montana as a child. His parents settled in what is now Beaverhead county and young Ira went to work for the large cattle company.

When Gilberts bought holdings in the Upper Ruby district, more than half a century ago, Mr. Townsend came with them to the old Larabee ranch. He acted as trucker for the company and worked for the concern until his health began to fail. He eventually lost his sight and at that time, he was brought to the Alder Rest Home, where he was cared for until his death.

Surviving relatives include two sisters, Mrs. H. P. Head of Butte, Mrs. H. E. Snyder of Redding, Cal., and a half sister, Mrs. John Hightower of Missoula, and his step mother, Mary Townsend of Stevensville. A nephew, Glen Smith, resides in Deer Lodge and a niece, Rose Norton, in Anaconda.
