Joseph Boatman Townsend, 84, passed away March 15, 2013 in Bozeman. He was born February 26, 1929 in Minot, N.D, first child to Joseph Boatman and Mildred Shaw Townsend.
The family moved to Phillipsburg when Joe was about 7 and it was here that he had a childhood that he remembered most fondly. The family moved to Missoula for a very short time and then to Helena where they resided until 1945. At that time they moved to Bethesda, Md. where Joe attended his last two years of high school and then entered the University of Maryland and joined Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. It was during this period that Joe met his future wife, Suzanne Gardner. Joe left the University to join the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.
On January 8, 1955, Joe and Suzanne were married at St. Albans Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. They lived in D.C., Drexel Hill and West Chester, Pa. and then moved to Montgomery Township, N.J. where they spent 26 years. Joe had spent these years working in the pharmaceutical industry as the Assistant to the Director of Research for Johnson and Johnson and in 1978 Joe joined Bio/dynamics, Inc., a testing laboratory, as their vice president and general manager. In this position Joe traveled to other countries to assist laboratories in complying with United States laws dealing with the proper laboratory practices necessary for them to sell their medicines in this country. He was an organizing member and past president of the Society of Quality Assurance for the United States which is now an international society. During this time he was also very active in the community- serving as President of the Montgomery Township Board of Education, charter member of the Montgomery Township Methodist Church, head of the building committee of same plus many jobs within the Church. He was also Vice President and Budget Chairman of the Greater Princeton United Way and served as umpire for the local Little League games.
Joe retired in 1992 and moved to Salt Lake City to consult with UBTL, a laboratory there. In 1997 he finally got back to his beloved Montana when he bought his home on Springhill Community Road in Belgrade where he has spent the remainder of his days working his gardens.
Joe was a member of the Bozeman United Methodist Church and served as President of Trustees of the Springhill Fire Service, and Budget Chairman of an early Gallatin County Detention Committee and also a consultant to the US Fish Technology Center. Joe was also a member and treasurer of the American Legion in Manhattan, and member of the Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers.
Joe is survived by his wife of 58 years, Suzanne, daughter Linda Suzanne Hurd (Jim), sons Joseph Boatman Townsend,1I1 (Simela) of Temecula, Calif., Thomas William Townsend (Lori) of Hummelstown, Pa., and James Gardner Townsend (Linda) of Lawrenceville, N.J., grandsons Ian Hurd and Alex Hurd (Elena) of Bozeman, granddaughters Grace and Kelly Townsend of Lawrenceville, N.J., grandson Timothy Townsend and granddaughter Allison Townsend of Hummelstown, Pa. and great-granddaughter Cheyenne Hurd of Bozeman. He is also survived by his brother Robert Shaw Townsend and niece Amy Katherine Townsend of Morganton, N.C.
