Samuel Arthur Sykes "Art", the son of George Arthur and Lulu (Wortman) Sykes, was born on September 5, 1920 on a small farm north of Ruskin, Nebraska. He passed away on
February 17, 2010 at Hebron, Nebraska at the age of 89 years, 8 months and 14 days.
He attended Summit School through 8th grade, prior to attending Ruskin High School graduating in 1938.
Art met his wife Rayoma Lowery of 67 years at the Oak Opera House and danced to the Big Band Sound of the 1940's. They were married by Pastor Dumler on June 28, 1942 at Christ Lutheran Church in Davenport, Nebraska. After four short weeks of marriage, Art was inducted into the Armed Forces during World War II. He was in the 1688th Engineer Combat Battalion of the Infantry and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a Drill Sergeant and was honorably discharged in February of 1946.

home in the town of Davenport and just recently were living at the Courtyard Terrace Assisted Living Residence in Hebron, Nebraska. The majority of their married life was spent in Nuckolls and Thayer Counties.
Art was a member of the American Legion Post 242 in Ruskin and then became a member of the American Legion Post 335 in Davenport where he was a member for over 60
years. He also at one time served on the Rural Fire Department Board in Davenport and was a Church Council Member of Christ Lutheran Church. He was baptized and confirmed by Pastor
