Rayoma Deloris (Lowery) Sykes, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 6, 2016 at the age of 96 years, in Geneva at Heritage Crossings Nursing Home.

Rayoma was born on April 9, 1919 during a blizzard to Mona and Virgil Lowery on a farm east of Oak, Nebraska. She attended Sunshine Valley School and Oak Elementary School until she entered High School in Davenport, Nebraska. She graduated from Davenport High in 1937.

Upon graduation, she attended Peru State College during the summer of 1937. The following fall Rayoma began a teaching career in a rural school near Deshler. She also taught at Blue Valley School near Oak, Nebraska and in Oak Elementary. Since she loved to dance, Rayoma met Arthur Sykes at a dance in Oak and after a short courtship, married him on June 28, 1942. Within a month Art was drafted into the service during World War II and she lived a short time with him in Georgia and Colorado before returning to live in Oak, Nebraska. Arthur and Rayoma were married for 67 years.

The couple first lived in Oak with their daughter Jeanette and then moved to a farm a mile north of Oak where they farmed for a number of years. In the late 1940’s they moved to their farmstead near Davenport where they farmed for nearly 40 years. Upon retiring, they built a new home in Davenport and lived there until 2008 when they moved to Hebron where they resided at Courtyard Terrace Assisted Living Center until Arthur’s death in 2010. In May of 2011, Raymona moved to Heritage Crossing Nursing Home and lived there until her recent death.

Rayoma devoted her life to being a farmer’s wife and more importantly a mother. Her dedication to her children was her main priority. Family always came first.

She always provided love and devotion even after they left home to begin their careers. She was well known for her cooking especially her pies.

Rayoma was active in Davenport’s Woman’s Club, Christ Lutheran Church Woman’ Organization was President of the PTA and Band Mothers, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she was a member for over 70 years. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and served on many committees over the years. Rayoma loved to dance, fish, camp, play cards and visit with family and friends. She also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Mexico, and Europe. She was instrumental in the planning and building of Davenport’s Community Center.

For many years, she baked and decorated beautiful wedding, birthday, and anniversary cakes for friends and relatives. She also loved to quilt, cross stitch, and crochet.

Rayoma was preceded in death by her husband Arthur, infant daughter Jeanette, her parents, Mona and Virgil Lowery, sisters Wand Biltoft and Doris Atenhan/Degner, as well as several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her son, Dean, his wife, Theresa, of Kimberling City, Missouri, their children Patrick of San Francisco, California, Becky, her husband, Justin Conley, of Omaha, Nebraska, and great grandchildren Lucy, Norah, and Miles Conley. She also is survived by her son, Robert of Crete, Nebraska, and a brother, Wendell Lowery, and his wife Carol, of Davenport, Nebraska.
