OBITUARY OF MARY ANN HOLBROOK (FROM WENDELL IRRIGATIONIST, FEBRUARY 9, 1928, WENDELL, GOODING CO., IDAHO)

Mary Ann Holbrook, mother of Liston Mack Holbrook, prominent farmer and businessman of Wendell, passed away at the local hospital Saturday morning at the age of 93 years. Death was due to general debility. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Methodist Episcopal Church with Rev. H. Fryer in charge. Interment was made in Wendell Cemetery.

Mary Ann Holbrook was born in Pennsylvania on February 4, 1834 and had she lived five more days would have been 94 years of age. She was married to Calvin Britton Holbrook in 1850. They were pioneers of the West and in 1914 came to Wendell and made their home with their son Liston Mack Holbrook. Rev. Calvin Britton Holbrook passed away May 9, 1924. Monday his wife was laid to rest beside him in the Wendell Cemetery.

Mrs. Holbrook is survived by two sons, Liston Mack Holbrook of Wendell and Welcome J. Holbrook of Rugby, North Dakota and on daughter Mrs. Emeline Mendenhall of Kalispell, Montana. One son preceded her to the great beyond in 1910 at the age of 59 years.

Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Holbrook continued to make her home with her son until a month ago Mrs. L. M. Holbrook passed away and she was taken to the hospital. Mrs. Holbrook had been an invalid for the past several years.

Mary Ann Gearhart married Calvin Britton Holbrook in Union County, Ohio, March 23, 1850. Calvin, a minister, came to Richwood, Ohio from the State of New Hampshire in the fall of 1849. Mary Ann and Calvin went to New Haven Township, Gratiot County, Michigan a couple years after they were married. Calvin was Justice of Peace in New Haven Township in 1857. They returned to Ohio as Calvin served with the 13th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry during the Civil War. He entered the Civil War, 12 June 1863 and was Honorably Discharged at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas 14 July 1866.

In September of 1866 Mary Ann and Calvin moved to Iowa, possible Lucas County, as Calvin's sister and her husband, Alvary Boylan were there. Calvin moved his family near Glenville, Nebraska in 1873. In 1887, they moved again to North Dakota (see account of Effie Holbrook Geibel). They lived at Pleasant Lake, North Dakota (about 6 miles east of Rugby) until 1907 when they moved to Wendell, Gooding County, Idaho. Calvin died in 1924 and Mary Ann died in 1928. They are buried beside each other at the Wendell Cemetery, Wendell, Gooding County, Idaho. Their son, Liston Mack and his wife Alice Ann are buried next to them.

Calvin and Mary Ann had seven children. The set of twins died in infancy.
