Harvey Gearhart was the son of Isaac and Ann (Shafer) Gearhart, born 26 October, 1822, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania. A copy of marriage was found in court records in Marysville, Union County, Ohio to Rachel Alder, 25 April 1848. No. 1312. Union Co., ss, On the twenty firth day of April A. D., I solemnized the marriage of Harvey Gearhart with Rachel Alder, signed Abijah Gandy, Justice of the Peace.

Harvey and Rachel are listed on the 1850 census of Union County, Ohio and his occupation is listed as wagon-maker. From court records, we learned that he bought three parcels of land in Richwood, Ohio and sold them off in 1852 to Robert E. Y Swartz. Some time after the 1850 census, Harvey and Rachel moved to Iowa. There a son, Harvey H. Gearhart, was born in 1854. Harvey died on 11 May 1854 in Eddyville, Mahaska Co., Iowa. There he is buried, as is his widow Rachel. Rachel shows in the 1860 US Census living with her brother Henry, her son Harvey H. is 6 years old.
