Mr. Mathias was born March 25, 1907, at Mathias and was a son of the late John Franklin and Mary Elizabeth See Mathias.

He retired from Rockingham Poultry and was a member of Garretts Chapel United Methodist Church at Mathias.

On February 8, 1927, he married the former Ola Lillian Seldon, who died November 20, 1986.

He is survived by three sons, Chester Mathias of Shelvyville, Tenn., Vernon Mathias of Harrisonburg, and David Mathias, of Falls Church, a daughter, Joanne Strawderman, of Hampton, a brother, Ben Mathias of Mathias, five sisters, Minnie Delawder of Hawse Nursing Home in Baker, Beulah Barb of Timberville, Gussie Stultz of Mathias, Ressie Hahn of Wardensville, and Elizabeth Getz, of Mt. Jackson, 19 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren.

The Rev. Jonathan Hedrick will conduct the funeral at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Garretts Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
