Joseph E. Vogler was a strong, muscular man, medium build. He worked very hard to feed and clothe his family and even in the worst depression years, there was always food on the table, a warm bed and sufficient clothing. He built a good Ice and Fuel business from almost nothing. He was a charitable man and if customers could not pay, he would permit them to put the charges on credit and pay a small amount at a time until they could pay the rest. Many accounts were still outstanding when he retired the business. He worked then for the Terminal Railroad until retirement. His farm at Beaufort, MO was his delight in later years and in retirement. He and he wife went to the farm each week-end. He did not farm the property but built a lake for fishing for the enjoyment of the family and had a truck garden.
