------------------------------------
James Douglas "Jay" Pappan, lifelong Newkirk area resident, died Thursday night, Jan. 21, 2010 in the Newkirk Nursing Center. He was 83.
The son of Alvin and Bertha Leona "Daisy" (Kirkbride) Pappan, James was born July 24, 1927 on the family farm near Newkirk.

He grew up on the farm and received his education from the Sweetwater Rural School. A special treat for Jay was coming to town every Saturday and having ice cream.

Upon finishing his education he worked on the family farm as well as hired out to other farmers in the area. He enjoyed the farm work of hay hauling and planting seedling trees. He also milked cows at the time when it was done by hand. James worked for many years with the farmers and ranchers in Kaw Country.

He enjoyed Grand Ole Opry, first on the radio and then on television.

Jay is survived by his mother; two brothers; and one sister; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

A graveside service was held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25 in the Newkirk Cemetery with Danny W. Cornish officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service.
