He was a member of Beech Grove Christian Church, a retired farmer and apple-grower and a former employee of the Morton Co. Mr. Fields was a U. S. Army veteran of World War I, serving in the 116th Infantry of the 29th Division. He fought in the trenches in Alsace-Lorraine and the Argonne Forest, France, where he received the Purple Heart.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frankie Davis Fields, who died on Dec. 29, 1978; four brothers, John Fields, Herman Fields, Earnest Fields and Alton Fields; and four sisters, Lillie Dameron, Ethel Campbell, Minnie Lowe and Pearl Fields.
Survivors include one son, James M. Fields of Earlysville; five daughters, Mrs. George D. (Marion) Brown and Mrs. Raymond M. (Gwendolyn) Black, both of Waynesboro, Mrs. Lloyd L. (LaVerne) Napier of Fishersville, Mrs. John W. (Sylvia) Witt of Afton and Mrs. W. Carlton (Carolyn) Mattox of Piney River; one sister, Miss Marjorie Fields of King, N. C.; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Beech Grove Christian Church by the Revs. Linda Parker and J. D. Farries and Robert Mansfield.Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors performed by the Stuarts Draft VFW Post 9339.
Pallbearers will be Keith Mattox, Scott Mattox and Donna Mattox, Roy McClanahan, Richard Anderson, George Kirtland, Dale Brown and Donald Brown.
Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Waynesboro First Aid Crew.
