George was the third child born to Troy and Pauline. The Van Winkles moved from the Blue Springs area to the Silver Creek area to farm the fertile Platte River bottom lands. George joined the U. S. Navy in World War II to serve as an Electician's Mate on board the U.S.S. Sisgbee in the Pacific. George returned as a Chief Petty Officer. He wed Neola Carter on September 23, 1949 in the Methodist Church in Silver Creek. To this union were born eight children: Clinton Allen, Lee Wayne, Scott Gilford, Neal Curtis, Lyndon Lale, Delois Jean, Kevin Kent and Duane Dexter.
