Julia Ann Read, daughter of Nelson and Sarah Marie (Johnson) Read, married Henry Bascom Forrey November 23, 1865 in Marshall County, Iowa. In 1872, they moved to Kansas to homestead, starting out with a covered wagon, three children, two horses and a colt tied on behind the wagon. They went to Jewell County, Kansas where they made their home for 35 years. They moved from their farm home to Lincoln, Kansas in 1907. Julia and Henry had 9 children: Albert Carlos, Laura Leona, Josephine Olivia, Ella Anneta, Henry Nelson, Hattie May, Ethel Florence, Ira Huber and Edith Hazel. After Henry's death in 1908, Julia spent the next 28 years living with her children. She died in California at the age of 90. Her body was returned to Kansas to be laid to rest next to her husband in Shaffer Cemetery.
