Funeral services for George F. Mattes, 91, a retired Town of Schleswig farmer, will be held Friday at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Kiel with the Rev. John F. Baumann pastor officiating. Mr. Mattes died Tuesday morning at the Toth Nursing Home, Chilton where he had been a resident for the past 2 ½ years. Burial will be in Schleswig cemetery.
Mr. Mattes was for in the Town of Schleswig on Oct. 5, 1877, the son of Phillip and Theresa Mattes, and married the former Mary Zorn of the Town of Schleswig. The couple farmed at Rockville for 50 years. The celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1954. His wife died in 1955. Mr. Mattes was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ, Kiel, a past president of the congregation, a former member of the church's consistory, past secretary of the Schleswig Cemetery Association, and president of the Meeme Fire Insurance Co for 35 years.
Survivors include a son Rudy of Rockville; five grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. A son preceded him in death.
