The remains of Mrs. Philip Mattes, whose passing on June 4, 1919, was briefly mentioned in our last week issue, were interred in the Rockville Cemetery on Saturday afternoon.
The funeral procession was one of the largest in the vicinity for some time, and indicated the esteem in which the deceased was held by the community where she had spent her life.
Theresa Mattes, nee Franz, was born in Gotha, Saxon-Weimar
Germany, April 29, 1849, coming to America about 50 years ago and located near Franklin, Sheboygan County. She was united in marriage to Philip Mattes in 1872, the couple settling on a farm near Rockville in the Town of Schleswig. Ten children were born to them, of whom seven have died. Her husband, who was a well-known Civil War veteran, preceeded her in death in 1910.
Six years ago Mrs. Mattes moved to Greenleaf, to take care of the household of her son Arthur. November 28, 1918, she suffered a stroke of paralysis which rendered her completely helpless. Six months ago she was brought to Kiel, be cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Albert Wagenknecht. She passed away on Wednesday June 4th at 2 pm, reaching the age of 70 years, 1 month & 6 days.
