MORGANTON - Horace Melton Metcalf, 84, of Rt. 5 Morganton, died Friday in a Caldwell County hospital after an illness of two years.
Born in Madison County, he was son of the late John Franklin and Georgi Ferguson Metcalf and his wife, Laura Price Metcalf, died in 1973. He was a retired carpenter.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. J. G. Pruett of Osnabrock, N. D., Mrs. Herbert H. Whisenant of Morganton; two sons, Marvin Metcalf and R. M. Metcalf of Morganton; four brothers, Floyd Metcalf of Hendersonville, Harvey Metcalf of Asheville, Ed Metcalf of Valdese and Clyde Metcalf of Morganton; two sisters, Mrs. Ressie Spears of Hendersonville and Mrs. Gertie Rhymer of Asheville; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Zion Baptist Church, of which he was a member. the revs. James Lambert, Matt Hastings and Bill Wease will officiate. Burial will be in church cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Sossoman Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes before services.
