METCALF, RETIRED MERCHANT, DIES

Services for John Franklin Metcalf, 94, retired West Asheville and Henderson County businessman who died Tuesday, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Anders-Rice Funeral Home.

The Rev. Ralph Sexton and the Rev. Lloyd Ballard will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers, all Masons, will be John Lawrence, Kelley Roberts, Eugene Stockton, Ray Plemmons, Calvin Marshall and Butch Marshall.

Graveside services will be conducted by members of West Asheville Masonic Lodge. The lodge will open at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Mr. Metcalf died in an Asheville nursing home following a long illness.

The former operator of Metcalf Grocery in West Asheville, he retired in 1945. He had also owned and operated Willow Springs Grocery in Hendersonville.

A native of Yancey County, he had made his home in Buncombe County for the past 40 years and lived at 574 Haywood Road at the time of his death.

He was a son of the late Absolum and Sarah Mitchell Metcalf.

He had been a member of Avery's Creek Free Will Baptist Church for the past 15 years and a Mason for more than 70 years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 665 in West Asheville at the time of his death.

Mr. Metcalf and his late wife, the former Miss Georgianna Ferguson, were married November 20, 1887. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in 1948. They resided on State Street at that time.

Surviving are five sons, Horace M., Clyde B., and Joseph E. Metcalf of Morganton, Floyd L. Metcalf of Hendersonville and Harvey E. Metcalf of West Asheville; four daughters, Mrs. Zora Norton of Horse Shoe, Mrs. R. C. Spears of Asheville, Mrs. Frances Norton of Skyland and Mrs. J. R. Rymer of West Asheville; 27 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
