DEATH OF JOHN E. KELLEY
WAS SUDDEN LAST EVENING
Aged Gardner of South Centerville
Succumbs to Attack of Heart Trouble
John E. Kelley, an old and highly respected citizen, expired suddenly last evening at 6:30 o'clock at his home, 1712 Drake Avenue, the result of an attack of heart trouble. While Mr. Kelley was well along in years and had been complaining of feeling badly at times, he was able to be about, had recently been up town and had that day been at work in his garden. The funeral announcements will be made after the arrival of his sons who reside elsewhere. John Emmett Kelley, deceased, was of Irish descent but was a native of this country, being born at Kewanee, Ill., March 25, 1842, and departed this life at the age of 64 years, 4 months and 6 days. He had resided in this city for many years and worked as a gardener. He is survived by his wife and several children, all of whom have grown to manhood and womanhood. His son, Edward, fireman on the C., B. & Q., resided at home. Mr. Kelley was a regular communicant of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Previous to his death Mr. Kelley had eaten supper and returned to the sitting room to read. Shortly after his wife entered and saw him throw himself back in his chair and she went to his assistance. A physician was hastily summoned but Mr. Kelley died in a short time, death occurring at 6:30 o'clock.

Note: Based on census records, John Emmet Kelly was probably born in Waukegan, Illinois, the long-term residence of his parents; his Civil War enlistment papers state he was born in Libertyville, Illinois; and his obituary states he was born in Kewanee, Illinois. The family name is Kelly, not Kelley. He was married May 21, 1876.
