Joseph was a Civil War veteran who served with Company F, 9th Regiment, Illinois Cavalry.
In 1878, Joseph moved from Illinois to Plattsmouth, Nebraska. Once there he worked as a brick maker for the Mockenhaupt family.
On October 16, 1879, he married Elizabeth, the eldest daughter of Christian and Barbara Mockenhaupt. The couple took up residence next door to Elizabeth's father. From there Elizabeth helped raise her younger siblings as their mother had passed away in 1877.
Joseph apparently could not recall the maiden name of his mother when he filled out his marriage registration and instead used the middle name of his brother, John "Emmet" Kelly. Therefore, the marriage record between Joseph and Elizabeth lists his mother's maiden name as being Julia "Emmet".
The union of Elizabeth and Joseph produced six children: Anna, Mary, Patrick, Edward, Theresa, and Edythe Kelly.
