She was Christened on March 28, 1864, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church located in Waukegan, Lake, Illinois.
On March 19, 1887, Esther entered the St. Xavier Academy where she became a Catholic Nun. She took on the name of Sister Mary Lucina Gray when she joined her Order, the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas.
Sister Mary Lucina was first assigned to St. Xavier Convent in 1889, and then to Mercy Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, where she remained for the remainder of her service to the Order.
