Richard Ephraim Fenn was born to William Fenn and Sarah Yarnell. Less than 2 months later, his father drowned in the Provo River, His parents had been married only a year and a half. He had several half-siblings from both his father's and mother's previous marriages, but was the only child born to this union.

In 1863, when Richard was about 4 years old, his mother married William Stradling, her third husband, after having been widowed twice. Then on 26 February 1865, Richard gained another half-brother, Thomas.

1st wife: Sarah Lewis (1864--1892)
m: 7 July 1881 - Salt Lake City, Utah.

1. Mary Jane : 1882--1963
2. Lorenzo Richard : 1884--1952
3. James Albert : 1885--1948
4. Adelia : 1889--1974
5. Florence Marie : 1892--1893

Three weeks after Florence was born, Sarah died on 3 Oct 1892; she was only 28 years old. Richard remained a widower for 5 years.

2nd wife: Josephine Smith Hill (1877--1926)
m: 18 Jan 1897 - Salt Lake City, Utah
She was 20 yrs old and he was 36. They divorced in 1914.
