Melbert Akers, 77, of Powell, passed away October 19, 2009, at Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Born January 10, 1932, he was preceded in death by his parents, Daily and Gertie Acres Duncan; one son, Melbert L. Akers, Jr.; step-father, Luther Duncan; and one brother, James Milford Duncan.

He was a veteran of World War II, a Mason, and a Shriner.

He is survived by his wife, Freda Allen Akers; two daughters: Debbie Shubaily and husband, Sami Al, and Sharon Poe; five grandchildren, three brothers: Joe Duncan, David Duncan and wife, Missy, all of Oneida, and Joshua Duncan and wife, Bonnie, of Rising Sun, Ind.; six sisters: Sue Staten and husband, Bob, and Easter Toler, all of Oneida, June Toomey and husband, Dan, of Broken Arrow, Okla., Lynn Fornash and husband, Earl, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mary Hall of Oneida; and many other relatives.

Funeral service was conducted October 24, at Salem Baptist Church with Bro. Bob Staten officiating. Music was provided by Mary Hall and Jerry Day. Interment followed at Wilhite Cemetery in the Buffalo community with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post #136.

Four Oaks Funeral Home of Oneida had charge of arrangements.
