Duncan, Gertie Marie Acres-74, of the Buffalo Community, passed away Saturday afternoon, September 26, 1987, at the UT Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. The daughter of the late David Acres and the late Martha Watson Acres, she was born in the Pine Hill Community on May 1, 1913. Mrs. Duncan was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Edward Luther Duncan, one infant son, James Milford Duncan, two grandsons, Joey Bond and Melbert Acres, Jr., one sister and four brothers. She was a faithful member of the Salem United Baptist Church. Survivors include six daughters, Sue Staten and Ann Kidd, both of Hamilton, Ohio, Easter Toler of Brady, Texas, June Toomy of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Lynn Fornash of Lewisville, Texas, and Mary Hall of the Buffalo Community, four sons, Melbert Acres of Milford, Ohio, Joe Duncan of Arnold, Missouri, David Duncan of the Buffalo Community, and Joshua Duncan of the Pine Hill Community. Three sisters also survive, Ida Belle Reed of Oneida, Mary Warner of Goshen, Ohio, and Etta Reynolds of Somerset, Kentucky. She is survived by two special grandsons who grew up with the family, Charles Timothy Holt and James Edward Holt, twenty-two other grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, two special friends, Pearl Duncan of the Buffalo Community and Milford Ellis of the Annadell Community, several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. at the Salem United Baptist Church with Rev. A. V. Stanley, Rev. Obis Byrd, and Rev. Bill Duncan officiating. The Gospel Echoes sang. Burial followed in the Whilhite Cemetery in the Buffalo Community. West-Murley Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. (Source: West Union Association of United Baptists Minutes, 1988, p18)
