The son of Francis Xavier "Frank" Carey and Anna Theresa Evering, John lived on the family farm in Calhoun County, Illinois. His mother died in 1888 and the children were split up among various homes after that. His father remarried in 1891.

John married Anna Maria "Annie" Williamsmeyer on 11 May 1909 in Calhoun County, Illinois. She was the mother of 2 children from a previous marriage. Both girls seem to have used the Kary surname.

John was a farmer, and the Karys were the parents of 2 children. They were members of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brussels, Calhoun County, Illinois.

At the time of his death at Montreat Nursing Home, John was 82 years, 6 months and 9 days old. He was survived by 1 son, Martin Kary of Golden Eagle, Illinois; 2 step-daughters, MaryymeKlocke and Lizzie Stein; 8 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; 1 half-brother, Ben Carey; and 1 half-sister, Theresa Plummer.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Annie, who passed away in 1957; and 1 daughter, Dorothy Kary.

Visitation was held at the C. C. Hanks Funeral Home in Brussels on 23 Apr 1964. Funeral services were conducted at 9 a.m. on the morning of 25 Apr 1964 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brussels
