Harmon married Zita Pauline Rippley of Grafton, Illinois on 06 Oct 1915. They moved to Alton, Illinois soon after their marriage. They were the parents of 1 child.
Harmon worked in the grocery business in Alton. He operated stores located on West 9th and Dry Streets and at the corner of Washington and Sanford Avenues. After that, he went into the laundry business and then worked for the Alton Laundry Company for many years. Late in life, he took a job as a custodian at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton where he worked for the final 2 years of his life.
The Careys were members of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He belonged to St. Joseph's Holy Name Society as well.
On the morning of 25 Jan 1960, Harmon became ill at his home. He was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph's Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His death at the age of 68 years, 3 months and 12 days, came unexpectedly.
He was survived by his wife, Zita; 1 daughter, Carol McCoy of Godfrey, Illinois; 3 grandchildren; 1 sister, Theresa Plummer of Grafton; 1 brother, Ben Carey of Grafton; and 1 half-brother, John Kary of Brussels, Illinois.
Visitation was held at Burke Funeral Home in Alton. A Solemn Requiem High Mass was sung at 9 a.m. on 27 Jan 1960 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. Committal rites were performed at St. Patrick's Cemetery.
The pallbearers were William Millering, George Gerbig, Leo Theisen, Fulton Calame, Paul Boschert and Robert Howard.
