Paul Carlton Dies From Accidental Gunshot Wound

Held Private First Class Rank in Company K 142nd Infantry

PFC. Paul Frederick Carlton, age 19, died of accidental gunshot wound Monday at 11 AM at the Stamford Sanitarium. He and his brother, Elvin Carlton, were home on furlough from Camp Bowie, Brownwood, and were visiting at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter C. Calton of Tuxedo.
The two brothers and another brother, Joe, of Stamford and a brother-in-law, Virgil Rush, of Odessa, went hunting Sunday morning and returned home near noon.
Paul stopped about a hundred yards from the house for a shot at some rabbits while the others proceeded to the house. He was found about half an hour later lying unconscious under a fence with his gun beside him. He never regained consciousness. It is assumed that the gun was accidentally discharged as he crawled through the fence. The bullet entered his forehead.
Carlton was mobilized here with Company K on November 25, 1940. He received his private first class rating about six months ago. He was still in Company K, 142nd Infantry, with First Lieut. Robert E. Mehaffey, Jr., as commanding officer. Sgt. George Rivers, Jr., and seven others from Company K, came from Brownwood for the funeral.
Funeral serivce was held Tuesday at 3 PM at the Baptist
Church at Tuxedo, Rev. C.S. Cox of Abilene , pastor of the Tuxedo Baptist Church, and Rev. H.S. Hinson, pastor of the Swenson Avenue Baptist Church, Stamford, conducted the service. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery near Tuxedo.
Kinney Funeral Home directed the funeral.
Survivors are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter C. Carlton of Tuxedo; four brothers, Carl of Stamford, Norman of Hamlin, and Joe and Elvin; three sisters, Mrs. Walter Osment of Tuxedo, Mrs. Ruby Hoote of Stamford, and Mrs. Vigil Rush of Odessa.
